Police were called to the North Coogee site about 5.20am. The man died from his injuries at the scene.
Forensic officers spent the morning collecting evidence as Department of Fire and Emergency Services firefighters disassembled the machine.
WorkSafe investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding his death.
The horrific way the man died has left colleagues traumatised, with 7NEWS observing staff members crying and consoling each other after the death.
WA Salt Supply says it has commissioned an independent investigation into what went wrong.
“This is a devastating day for everyone at WA Salt, and our thoughts are with the deceased’s friends, family and colleagues at this extremely difficult time,” the company said in a statement.
“Employee safety and wellbeing is our highest priority and counselling has been made available for all employees.”
Unions WA secretary Owen Whittle said the death was an “absolute tragedy”.
“Our thoughts go out to the workers at the site, as well as the family members and those who have unfortunately had to respond to this incident,” he said.
Whittle said there had been about 20 workplace deaths in WA over the past 12 months, prompting the state to introduce new workplace safety laws three months ago.
“One workplace death is too many,” Whittle said.
“It’s a clear message that we always need to be doing more to keep our workplaces safe.”
