INDUSTRIAL TOWNSHIP — A 40-year-old man was found dead by his co-workers at a Northland Construction gravel pit at 2:53 p.m. Wednesday.
Brad Lewis Wojtysiak, of Culver Township, was found dead after performing maintenance on a conveyor at the gravel pit near state Highway 33 and Sunset Lake Drive, according to a St. Louis County Sheriff's Office news release.
While other workers were in the area, the Wojtysiak was alone at the time of the incident and it appears to be an industrial accident.
The death is being investigated by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
St. Louis County supervising deputy Wade Rasch said aspects of the conveyor were running, not the conveyor itself, when the incident occurred.
"Typically, power would be cut off to a piece of equipment before it is being serviced," he said. "That is what is being looked into then, how exactly that scenario was happening."
The Cloquet Area Fire Department's heavy rescue team responded and assisted with the recovery.
