MITCHELL — Authorities in Mitchell are seeking information about a suspicious fire that dealt damage to several vehicles and other equipment in the area.
Shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday, fire crews in Mitchell were called to an area near the intersection of Cedar Avenue and Ohlman Street for a report of a possible grass fire.
Upon initial arrival, crews reported a large fire in a tree belt to the west of Sign Pro, located at 601 S. Ohlman St. Due to the size of the fire, the first crew on scene called for multiple backup units, totalling three fire trucks and 10 firefighters on scene. The Mitchell Police Division also responded.
The fire was mostly contained to a tree belt, but authorities say several vehicles and other equipment were damaged in the blaze.
After battling the fire for roughly 45 minutes, crews remained on scene until nearly 1 a.m. Wednesday to ensure the fire didn’t kick back up as a result of wind and other debris in the area.
An investigation into the fire ruled out accidental causes, and the blaze was deemed suspicious.
Authorities are requesting anyone with information to contact authorities with the Mitchell Department of Public Safety at 605-995-8400.
